CFCJ In Ottawa

Justice Karakatsanis delivering her galvanizing opening remarks at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Last week, our new director Jean-Paul Bevilacqua was proud to represent the CFCJ at the Action Committee on Access to Justice / Comité d’action sur l’accès à la justice‘s inaugural national conference on advancing people-centred justice in Canada.

This conference, curated with aplomb by the organizing committee, represented a much-needed opportunity for those doing the vital work of increasing access to justice across the country to gather in one place to share knowledge, ideas and solutions with the hopes of coordinating and collaborating to bring these initiatives back to their respective communities.

During the opening reception at the Supreme Court of Canada, one of the last events to be held there before it closes for a decade-long renovation this summer, Justice Karakatsanis, chair of the Action Committee, set the tone for the upcoming program with a reminder for us that “law without justice is order without a soul”.

It was only the beginning of the momentum, and, as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Sean Fraser stated in his remarks, it is now up to those in attendance to ride that momentum and harness the opportunities for changes identified going forward in actionable ways…and in ways that make concrete, felt differences in the lives of Canadians.

Jean-Paul and the CFCJ look forward to leading and being a part of these necessary efforts.
