Development
Pro Bono Law Alberta (PBLA) is a non-profit organization funded by the Law Society of Alberta. PBLA administers and oversees a number of pro bono legal programs and facilitates the pro bono legal clinics in Alberta.
Purpose
To improve access to justice in Alberta.
Description of reforms
PBLA works with existing pro bono legal clinics to assist them in providing pro bono services and fosters the development of new pro bono programs where needed.

Calgary

Calgary Legal Guidance
  • Volunteer lawyers provide free legal advice for low income individuals
  • Legal Areas: Family, Criminal, Civil, Orders of Protection, Social Benefits and other areas
Student Legal Assistance (Calgary)
  • Law students at the University of Calgary, under the supervision of a lawyer, provide year-round free legal assistance and representation to residents of the Calgary area who cannot afford legal assistance
Children's Legal & Educational Resource Centre
  • Provides children, youth and their families with legal information, advice, education, and representation
Women's Centre Legal Advice Clinic
  • Operates on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Appointment required
  • Volunteer lawyers provide assistance in various areas of law, with the highest demand traditionally in the family law area, during half hour appointments

Edmonton

Edmonton Community Legal Centre
  • Offers free legal information, advice and representation for people living with low income in the Edmonton area
  • Legal Areas: Landlord/Tenant, Employment/Wrongful Dismissal, Small Claims, Income Support Advocacy, Human Rights, Debt, Immigration
Student Legal Services of Edmonton
  • Law students at the University of Alberta, under the supervision of a lawyer, provide year-round free legal services to those individuals who are unable to afford a lawyer

Grande Prairie

Grande Prairie Legal Guidance
  • Volunteer lawyers provide free legal guidance and information to low income individuals in the Grande Prairie community who have a legal concern and do not qualify for Legal Aid

Lethbridge

Lethbridge Legal Guidance
  • Offers free legal advice to individuals of limited means that do not qualify for Legal Aid in the Lethbridge community

Red Deer

Central Alberta Community Legal Clinic
  • A free legal advice service for people who do not qualify for legal aid in the Red Deer area
  • Legal Areas: Family, Civil, Landlord/Tenant, Wills and Estates, some Criminal matters
