Dispute Resolution Award in Law Studies

Background

In December 1998, the Department of Justice Canada launched the Dispute Resolution Award in Law Studies in law schools across Canada. The purpose of the monetary award is to encourage law students to pursue a greater understanding of dispute resolution. Every year, the Dean of each law school is invited to select a paper which best demonstrates the pursuit of new ideas and excellence in the field of dispute resolution. A Blue Ribbon Panel selects one paper among the DR Award recipients that on the basis of merit most warrants national recognition. The national winner is sponsored to attend and present a paper at a national DR conference.

In the year 2006, a total of 6 awards, each worth $750.00 were bestowed on students who presented an Award winning paper. Further, the Blue Ribbon Panel selected the paper entitled "Breaking Eggs/Rebuilding Societies: Traditional Justice as a Tool for Transitional Justice in Northern Uganda" written by Barbara Harvey from the University of Victoria Law School.

The Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, in conjunction with Dispute Prevention and Resolution Services of the Department of Justice, is pleased to make available the Award winning papers for the years 2006, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, and 1999. You will find them below. Please note that there were no awards given for 2004.

The Dispute Resolution Award in Law Studies is currently under review and no award will be offered for the 2006-2007 academic year.
